Kevin Algar, BA (Hons), JD, CIMA®, CFP®, CLU®, CIM®, TEP, FEA
Kevin is a co-founder, President and CEO of GENn Family Office Ltd., winner of STEP’s (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) international award for Multi-Family Office Team of the Year (2018/2019). He is passionate about helping families of wealth reduce the complexities they face and increasing their peace of mind.
He was born in 1956 in Rimbey, a small town in central Alberta, and has made Calgary his home since he was a few weeks old. He is a proud 6th generation Canadian and 4th generation Albertan. His family members were pioneers in the Calgary and Central Alberta areas having first homesteaded near Okotoks in the 1880s.
He attended the Queen’s University School of Business for one year and then completed an Honours BA in Psychology at the University of Calgary in 1978. He then completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1981 at the University of Calgary (now converted to a Juris Doctor (JD), specializing in business and tax law.
After articling with a Calgary law firm and being admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1982, he specialized in tax planning with an international firm of Chartered Accountants until 1986. He then ran a small high-technology waste water treatment company until 1989 when he returned to tax practice with another international firm of Chartered Accountants.
Unable to resist his entrepreneurial genes and believing (as usual) that there was a lot of room for improvement, Kevin struck out on his own in the financial services industry in 1994. After an exploratory year and some lessons learned, he formed Algar Virtue with Jim Virtue, a Chartered Accountant he’d known for many years and someone who had the right combination of values and talent. They participated in the acquisition and building of several successful ventures in the financial services industry, culminating in a reputation for prudence and excellence.
Kevin’s preference has always been working with clients and from inception this has been his focus. He is widely respected and known as an innovator in the industry.
With 38 years experience in the fields of tax, investment and estate planning and family enterprise advising, Kevin provides premium, exclusive and independent professional services to successful families. Having assisted hundreds of families, he possesses a tremendous knowledge base of what works and what doesn’t. He also has significant experience as an executor and trustee for significant family estates.
Kevin has been an instructor and speaker on taxation and retirement planning topics to groups including the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, The Canadian Tax Foundation and the (former) Canadian Association of Financial Planners. He is an Advisory Board member for the Alberta Business Families Institute as well as a member of the FEA Council, under the auspices of the Family Enterprise Exchange.
Memberships include the Law Society of Alberta, The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, The Investment Management Consultants Association and the Family Enterprise Exchange. With his background in tax planning, pension law and estate planning, he has been an instructor and speaker on taxation and retirement planning topics to groups including the Canadian Bar Association, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Canadian Tax Foundation, Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and Canadian Association of Financial Planners.
Kevin is committed to continuing education in all areas that affect his clients. His education and credentials span the field of wealth management and family enterprise advising. He holds a BA (Honours) in psychology (1978) and is a Certified Financial Planner® certificate holder (1998), with specialized training in a variety of areas. In the field of investment planning, he carries the Chartered Investment Manager® (CIM® – 1999) designation from the Canadian Securities Institute and the Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA® – 2004) designation administered by the Investment Management Consultants Association® and taught in conjunction with The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. In the fields of tax and estate planning, he has a law degree (Juris Doctor – 1981) from the University of Calgary and is a Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP – 2003) and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU® – 2006).
